A family whose prized horse was killed when it fell through the floor of a ‘death trap’ £65,000 lorry have received a five-figure settlement. Carole Mutch was transporting eventer Gorsehill Echo to a friend’s farm when it fell through the horsebox’s 1.8cm plywood flooring in March 2015. The horse, thought to be worth £35,000, became trapped between the double wheels – breaking its leg and severing its hoof and had to be euthanized while still stuck inside the vehicle. TikTok’s new ‘Hashtag Challenge Plus’ lets video viewers shop for products in the app

TikTok, the short-form video platform favored by young adults and teens, has launched a new feature that allows users to shop for products associated with a sponsored Hashtag Challenge, without leaving its app. These sponsored challenges are Gen Z-friendly marketing campaigns where users are prompted to post videos of them using a product — like showing off favorite outfits from Uniqlo or Guess, for example. Or they might participate in some sort of manufactured viral trend, like singing favorite Disney songs ahead of a Disney-themed episode of American Idol. The new e-commerce feature, called Hashtag Challenge Plus, adds a shoppable component to the hashtag. In addition to creating and viewing videos featuring the brand’s sponsored hashtag, a separate tab features an in-app experience where products from the campaign can be purchased within TikTok itself. Last week, Kroger was the first brand to try out the new feature, according to a report from AdWeek. While not exactly a company that exudes youth appeal, Kroger found a way to reach TikTok’s young adult audience through their hashtag campaign. In partnership with four TikTok influencers — Joey Klaasen, Cosette Rinab, Mia Fin...

Programmable Mimic Go tracks your stuff, can be a handy bike tail-light too

Mimic Go might look like a bubbly, chubby-version of a tracking tag (which it is) but that’s only one of the tricks it has up its red, plastic sleeve. Not only can you track stuff around the world thanks to GPS, LTE-M & eSIM connectivity, but the Mimic Go can help prevent things from going missing in the first place. It can even alert you if someone approaches a room you’d like to keep secure. And light up your ride. San Francisco-based Smart Mimic has dabbled in this area before, in fact using pretty much the same enclosure design and color, but this iteration of its IoT (Internet of Things) technology – launched this week on Indiegogo – sets itself apart from other offerings with its customizable triggers – or “Skills” as the team from Smart Mimic calls them. You can use these Skills to set up a number of desired security scenarios, all powered by a smartphone-based (iOS/Android) app. You can also design your own Skills within the app and share these with the broader community of Mimic Go users. If you’ve ever used IFTTT (If This, Then That) or Zapier, then you’ll know how intuitive – and easy – this method of task-based, layperson’...

At MASS MoCA, Cauleen Smith Builds an Afrofuturist World

In the artist’s largest survey to date, science fiction and narratives of black resistance offer a vision of a more inclusive future At the threshold of ‘We Already Have What We Need’ – an exhibition of film, installation, textile and works on paper by multimedia artist Cauleen Smith at MASS MoCA – visitors are beckoned in by a three-and-a-half-minute video of a young girl twirling in a cape. Spin (2012), from Smith’s series ‘The Way Out Is the Way Two: Fourteen Short Films About Chicago and Sun Ra’ (2010–12), shows the girl perform a quick balletic hop before turning, arms outstretched, on a concrete ledge to the soundtrack of Sun Ra’s ‘El Is a Sound of Joy’ (1968, recorded 1956). The child’s repetitive spinning action combines exhilaration with focus and a simultaneous connection to, and transcendence of, her quotidian environment. This free yet attentive movement also serves as a legend for interpreting the visionary contents of the exhibition. Curated by Susan Cross, the show knits together several of Smith’s genre-defying approaches to social critique, 20th-century experimental cinema and Afrofuturist world-building.
