Having started out as a manufacturer of letterpress machines, the company has since grown considerably to serve a range of markets including packaging, personalisation and corrugated printing. It also has an 80% market share in security printing.

Since celebrating its 200-year anniversary in 2017, Koenig & Bauer has been moving full steam ahead with continued innovation and growth. So, what does the last year in the shoes of Koenig & Bauer look like?

At the end of 2018, borne out of a desire to offer more products for the production process, the Group moved to integrate folder gluers manufacturer Duran Machinery into the business. This enabled Koenig & Bauer to expand its activities in the growing packaging market.

Now the printing industry has embraced the digital future, we are making use of new technologies to make print sexy”

Kicking off the new year with the same sense of momentum, the company signed a joint venture with “experts in digital printing,” Durst, for the joint development of single-press digital printing systems for the folding carton and corrugated fibreboard industry.

Recognising that packaging is never just CMYK due to a demand for added value such as varnish, Koenig & Bauer developed the VariJET 106 digital printing press for folding carton. By integrating inkjet technology into the platform of its Rapida 106 offset press, users can create personalised and individual print products.

In terms of performance, Strelczyk revealed a 10.5% higher order intake at sheetfed, with an “encouraging order growth” in medium-format and service. Sales were slightly lower than last year however, which Strelczyk says is partly due to issues with sub-suppliers and partly due to the fact that the company receives the majority of its deliveries at the end of the year. Because of this factor, the firm is still confident it will reach its sales target by the end of 2019.

Chris Scully, sales director of Koenig & Bauer; Nick Wilson, commercial director of DG3/Leycol; Andrew Pang, managing director of Koenig & Bauer; and Jason Manchester, technical manager of DG3 Leycol.

Despite overall sales being lower than last year, Strelczyk describes its UK sales as “excellent” with deliveries much higher this year. He says the company is “gaining ground” and credits a move towards larger machines and more complicated solutions for these figures.

Amidst an inevitable move to digital and the closure of well-known print titles over the year, Strelczyk stresses the company’s commitment to not only creating top-quality machinery, but also to focus on providing excellent customer service, and moving with digital times to increase productivity and reduce downtime. He says: “Now the printing industry has embraced the digital future, we are making use of new technologies to make print sexy.”

One way the firm has done this over the year is the development of predictive services. This is a way to correct issues in machinery before they occur and includes features such as real-time monitoring, maintenance reminders, remote control, and notifications. An example of this is the Koenig & Bauer Rapida Live App – an instrument designed to control a machine remotely.

We constantly strive for high levels of quality and service and are pleased that we can do so whilst still achieving excellent performance figures, enabling us to remain competitive in a challenging market”

The annual event is also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of its customers through its Koenig & Bauer 1814 Production Excellence Award.

The name of the award commemorates the commissioning of the first ever power-driven press which was designed and built by engineers Friedrich Koenig and Andreas Bauer for The Times, London in November 1814.

This year, for the first time ever the company split the award into two following a particularly strong year of achievements from its customers.

DG3/Leycol was presented the Commercial Printing award for work completed on its Rapida 106 5+ Coater which was installed in May this year. The company was recognised for its time saving and low waste production.

Edward Bone, managing director-sales; Mark Jeavons, print manager; Hugh Jarvis, chairman; Mike Cass, commercial director; and Vince Brearey, managing director-operations, all of Offset Print & Packaging.

Offset Print and Packaging received the Packaging Printing award for its work on high quality tea cartons and the production of a mail order meal kit solution pack. Both jobs were completed on a Rapida 106 6+ Coater which was installed in May 2017. The firm was commended for waste saving a rapid ‘wash ups’ of special colours.

Commenting on the win, Michael Cass, operations director of Offset Print & Packaging says: “Offset Print & Packaging are extremely proud to have won this year’s Koenig & Bauer 1814 Production Excellence Award. We have no doubt that the competition would have been to an exceptionally high standard, and it is a credit to all of the staff involved in having achieved this.

“We constantly strive for high levels of quality and service and are pleased that we can do so whilst still achieving excellent performance figures, enabling us to remain competitive in a challenging market.”

In today’s industry printers are expected to produce high quality products as efficiently as possible whilst being aware of our responsibilities to the environment and other social factors.”

Coss describes the award as a recognition of the emphasis the company places on investment, in terms of equipment and staff; both of which he says are vital to Offset’s goals. He adds: “In today’s industry printers are expected to produce high quality products as efficiently as possible whilst being aware of our responsibilities to the environment and other social factors.

"It is, therefore, important that we work with recognised leading market brands within the supply chain, such as Koenig & Bauer, to continually achieve, and improve on, these objectives.”

Looking forward, Koenig & Bauer is gearing up for Drupa 2020 with two exhibition booths. One which will showcase its sheetfed capabilities, and the other to demonstrate its packaging solutions. Quoting the company’s focus for the upcoming year, Strelczyk says: “What can we do to make make-readies even shorter? Increase productivity.”
